Energy efficiency becomes mandatory

From now on, if you build a new home in Riverhead, Babylon or Brookhaven, you must use energy efficient materials such as compact fluorescent bulbs, extra-paned windows and extra insulation.
And by, “you must,” we mean, it’s the law.

You’ll pay more to float from Orient

The Cross Sound Ferry, the system that runs the ferry route from Orient Point to New London, Conn. is adding a fuel surcharge because of the rising oil prices.
As of Dec. 1, the previous $44 fare for one driver and an automobile will jump to $46.64.

Upstate nuclear plant outputs less power

Unit 2, a 1,140-megawatt nuclear reactor located at the Nine Mile Point plant in Oswego County, which is part-owned by the Long Island Power Authority, was only outputting at 85 percent Thursday morning. No reason is known for the lowered electricity output.
