FROM OWEN RYAN AT VOLT. http://www.drinkvolt.com
-----------------------------------------------------------------

The issue really has less to do with subscription declines in the top 20 papers, but with the increase in the velocity of the decline over the last 3 years. More importantly, when print vs. Internet readers are surveyed regarding "depth of readership", the Internet pick-up of a story is more likely to be read through to the end. This is not so for print.

Total audience declines for print, and gains for Internet are strongest in 25-39, followed by the 18-24 crowd.

I'm OLD!, and while I still enjoy reading a newspaper, on rare occasion, 90% of my news comes from the net. Even "thought" pieces and longer articles are both encountered and read thanks to sites like Arts & Letters Daily. Nobody in business that I know of -- meaning someone with an actual job -- has time to sort through their daily paper for news when the web is so much more efficient (except, maybe, for sports!)

I went to the mall for the first time on Halloween - traffic was not an issue as the rest of LI was out trick or treating.

At first, I was somewhat impressed with the design and "City Center"-type setting (as in West Palm Beach) but when i looked closer, i was very disappointed with the workmanship, the quality of the materials used, and finally the endless sea of concrete. The finishing touches were very shoddy as was the workmanship, and they could have come up with a nicer alternative to the cold, boring, grey concrete walkway throughout the mall. It's NOT HIGH END shopping!! The Tangers should go down to "City Center" in West Palm Beach to see how a lifestyle center is designed and built!! There's no comparison, and the workmanship and design of City Center puts the Arches to shame. There's not enough plantings, foliage, shrubs, etc. Maybe if they paint the cold, grey concrete walkways green, people will think they're in a "greener" setting.

I did however marvel at the multi-colored lights bathing the area/walkway covered by a roof structure under which shoppers may find respite from precipitation. I wonder if they had the foresight to put in radiant heat in the walkways to melt the snow and ice??!! It probably would have cost too much, and by the workmanship and materials used, the Tangers figured the Deer Park area wasn't worth the investment.

Finally, there are no restaurants!! Restaurants are a big part of a true lifestyle center!! The Tangers should go out to Atlas Park in Glendale, NY -- that's a true lifestyle center and that's HIGH END SHOPPING with restaurants, trees, shrubs, and a movie theatre!! The Arches falls short of the mark!!
