Nassau County, Democrat country

October 7, 2008 by David Reich-Hale

Perhaps it’s because George W. Bush has an approval rating of two – as in only Laura and Barbara Bush still think he’s fit to be president. Maybe it’s that more Long Islanders are feeling a financial squeeze and thus are willing to change parties. Or, yes, it could just be the shifting demographics of Nassau County. Whatever the reason, the Democrats have reason to celebrate.

And celebrate they will, holding a press conference Wednesday to announce that for the first time in a century Nassau County has more registered Democrats than Republicans. Nassau County Democratic Chairman Jay Jacobs will be at the event, scheduled for Wednesday at 11:30 a.m. at the steps of the Nassau County Supreme Court in Mineola.

Before anyone waves this off as nothing more than political grandstanding, remember that Nassau County was long considered, as the press release stated, “home of the nation’s strongest Republican political machine.” That includes former Sen. Al D’Amato.

If that’s not enough, Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi and Suffolk Legis. Jon Cooper announced they’re holding a rally in support of Barack Obama for president on Oct. 15, the day Hofstra hosts the debate between Obama and John McCain.

That rally will also take place at the courthouse in Mineola.
