Here comes the sun king

August 1, 2008 by Henry E. Powderly II

Suffolk County Executive Steve Levy today will release an extensive list of county-owned properties that could host free-standing or rooftop solar energy systems.

Levy has already said he wants to make Suffolk the “Solar County.”

According to his office’s statement, the list includes 300 acres of land that the county acquired through tax default, as well as 1.2 million square feet of rooftop space. The roster will be submitted to the Long Island Power Authority, which has issued a request for proposals to build enough solar installations on Long Island to generate 50 megawatts of electricity, enough to power 6,500 households.

Solar energy companies would have to contact Suffolk about using any of the sites.

Here’s a selection from Levy’s list of solar-perfect parcels:

  • Nearly 300,000 sq. ft. of rooftop at the Riverhead County Center;
  • 272,000 sq. feet of rooftop at the Riverhead Criminal Courts;
  • 104,000 sq. ft. of rooftop at Riverhead Civil Court;
  • 90,000 sq. ft. of rooftop at the Department of Public Works in Yaphank;
  • 54,000 sq. ft. of rooftop at the Probation/FRES building in Yaphank;
  • 32,000 sq. ft. of rooftop at Citibank Park in Central Islip;
  • 61 acres of land adjunct to the Suffolk County Community College in Selden;
  • 44 acres of county-owned land on Horseblock Road and Old Town Road in Yaphank;
  • 33 acres of land at the BOMARC facility in Westhampton Beach;
  • 30 acres of Brownfield property on which Suffolk has a tax lien in Kings Park;
  • 27 acres of property in Bellport;
  • 21 acres of property in Dix Hills
  • 6 acres of land in the parking lot of the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge
