John Basedow, who runs the “Fitness Made Simple” empire out of Massapequa will be speaking at the first annual Long Island Sports Expo September 6-7 at the Suffolk County Community College Sports & Exhibition Complex in Brentwood. Basedow covers the fitness and health waterfront with books, videos, infomercials, personal appearances and seminars.
Is it just me, but does Basedow look like an alien who materialized in a Gold’s Gym one day by mistake and worked the machines non-stop for 10 years straight? He seems to have a head that doesn’t belong perched on that power lifter’s body and a smile that is either dazed narcissism or one calculating how long it will take to get back to Planet Zog.
Sorry, enough of the ad hominem attack, especially coming from a writer who looks like he trains on pig’s knuckles and Guinness.
LIBN profiled Basedow in February of last year and our writer found him to be a personable and pleasant man. Also a shrewd one, the story reveals, with Basedow mapping a strategy to make Fitness Made Simple a presence on the Web.
But the hair, John? Any explanation?

Reading this was all the workout I needed today — oh my aching abs! But you forgot one detail, Ambrose: How is it that Mr. Basedow is that cut and yet he doesnt even fill out his shirt? Is he wearing XXL? Maybe it was the first article of clothing he laid eyes on when he materialized in the gym 10 years ago (left in the locker room by Tony “Big Guns” Bruno, Golds’ resident meathead, no doubt)? It’s certainly possible considering it’s denim — a fabric that was absolutely de rigueur on LI in the 90s…
