These are the times that try men’s souls.
A week from Friday we will celebrate the 232nd anniversary of the actions of brave men who risked ending up on the wrong end of an English rope to remove the power of British arms from our country.
And tomorrow that military might is scheduled to return, invading Long Island without a whimper of protest. In fact, there will be cheers, oohs and ahhs. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will shrink from this crisis ….
Sorry, I nearly forgot that the British are our gallant and steadfast allies. A warm welcome is expected Wednesday when for the first time in 60 years Royal Air Force jets will be seen in the New York area. A dozen RAF fighters will wing into Republic Airport in Farmingdale to be greeted by airport officials, the British consul and RAF veterans of The Big One who now live on Long Island.
The British war planes will then roar off to rendezvous over South Beach, Staten island, for a performance at the twilight’s last gleaming.
