The state Legislature has had it with unwanted faxes.
Both the Senate and Assembly passed bills Monday, the last day of the legislative session, protecting consumers from unwanted faxes.
The legislation requires all companies who send out unsolicited advertising faxes to include on those faxes a cost-free way for consumers to opt out of receiving future advertisements either by phone, fax or online.
Consider a low-tech do not call registry.
“Just like telemarketing phone calls, many individuals find unsolicited fax advertisements to be unwanted nuisance,” said state Sen. Charles J. Fuschillo Jr., R-Merrick. “By requiring companies to provide contact information on advertising faxes that consumers can easily use to opt out, we have given New Yorkers another way to protect their privacy.”

Great idea, but how dooe a person know?
For many years I live with and get an average of 2 junk faxes daily.
Most all have a removal on the page, but how does a person trust that the removal # is not recording a valadation to sell or distribute a now confirmed working Fax number?
…another ridiculous law by the nanny state…
Simply use the “Do Not Call Registry” procedures and technology and set up a “Do Not Fax Registry” for fax numbers. Why re-invent or have a “low-tech” solution when a system is already in place and works effectively?
It should NOT be the receiver of spam-faxes who calls each time. I have received faxes multiple times from what appears to be the same source, and each time there is a different opt-out number to call to be removed from their spam-fax list. Hmmmm.
It’s good that legislation was passed; just change the procedures to be followed put the responsibility on these fax-marketers to check a “Do Not Fax Registry”, just as telemarketers are required to do.
