Shoreham revival

June 12, 2008 by David Reich-Hale

The Long Island Power Authority is holding its first Shoreham Advisory Committee meeting on Friday.

The committee is charged with helping create a plan for the 50-acre property that includes the nuclear power plant in Shoreham. The plant cost $6 billion to construct, but never generated electric power, thanks to environmental concerns.

The committee includes Rep. Tim Bishop, state Assemblyman Marc Alessi, state Sen. Ken LaValle, Suffolk Legis. Ed Romaine and Tom Isles, the director of Suffolk County’s planning department.

the was never turned on due to SAFETY risks, not environmental. can’t blame the environmental community for everything.

Correct. People got nervous with the Three Mile Island incident. But, Shoreham did at one point receive a low power license and even did testing for that, but never generated any electric power. This was, in large part, due to the fact that Gov. Mario Cuomo would not/did not sign an Emergency Evacuation Plan. Without that, they could not get their license to operate at full power.

    Jon,

Wouldn’t you consider the threat of a nuclear disaster an environmental concern? I do.
And I don’t think we’re blaming the environmental community. If anything, we’re thanking them.
    Thanks for reading,

    David

There’s been talk in the national press lately about this country maybe needing to lean more heavily on nuclear power in the future. That suggests a use for the property: generate electricty…with nuclear power!

Investigating the generation of energy from the Shorem property is prudent and intelligent. I think this is one of the few times that I have referred to a Government action as “prudent and intelligent.”
