The Dennison gets upgraded

June 11, 2008 by Michael H. Samuels

Suffolk County is planning to spend more than $1 million to continue its safety and energy efficiency upgrades of the H. Lee Dennison Building in Hauppauge.

The monies will be used for the third phase of improvements on the 12-story building that houses many county offices, replacing a hot water boiler and weatherproofing the south and west sides of the building. The work should be done by the fall.

The north and east sides of the building have already been waterproofed and the staircases in the plaza were rebuilt for safety. Overall, the county is spending $3 million to modernize the building.

The final phase, to be completed in 2010, includes providing emergency power to the building management system, re-circuit feeders in the main switchboard to better balance electrical loads, provide exterior lighting work, HVAC improvements, building security system upgrades and more.

Work already done included outfitting offices in the building with occupancy light sensors, which turns lights off after a certain period of inactivity in an office.

Suffolk County’s first county executive, H. Lee Dennison helped created Suffolk Community College, acquired 15,000 acres for open space conservation and created a county planning department and human rights commission.

The county building was built in 1971 and named in Dennison’s honor the following year.
