Nassau County Executive Tom Suozzi has added auctioneer to his growing list of job titles.
Suozzi today is presiding over an online auction in which the county expects to make $1 million by selling $500,000 worth of boilers, piping, boats, pianos, furniture, generators, construction cranes and much, much more.
The equipment has been stored in the county’s many storage facilities.
Nassau County Purchasing Director Frank Ryan said most of it has been there so long the employees don’t know how it got there or what to do with it.
“We want to know what we’ve got, redeploy it, or if it’s junk,
get rid of it or sell it,” Ryan said.
He said the county is trying to reduce the number of storage facilities from 66 to two main warehouses to hold all the county’s necessary inventory.
“This stuff has been buried for decades,” Ryan said.
The online auction is being run by Auctions International. Bidding on items will continue until June 11.
