Hurray for the gas price gouging hotline
May 14, 2008 by Michael H. Samuels
In another attempt to keep gas prices from becoming astronomical, Suffolk County legislators are urging residents to call the state’s gasoline price hotline for residents to report any suspected price gouging.
The number is 1 (800) 214-4372. Phone lines are open day and night. And no, $3.99 a gallon is not considered gouging. It’s what we’re all paying these days, compared to $3.20 a year ago. Be lucky your Prius doesn’t run on diesel, because the AAA is reporting that’s going for $4.77 a gallon.
Today’s hotline announcement comes on heels of legislation by Suffolk County Legis. Wayne Horsley, who proposed setting penalties for gouging at $1,000 per offense to $10,000 per offense maximum. That bill will go before the Suffolk County Legislature’s Consumer Protection Committee on June 5.

“Be lucky you’re Prius doesn’t run on diesel…” I know the blog must be written relatively quickly, but come on. “You’re” vs. “your” is a basic rule of grammar, and certainly a journalist should be able to get it right.
Ridiculous!
Get rid of village and town government, so that the county legislature has something worthwhile to do!
