Suffolk Community College got some good news at the 2007-2008 SCCC Status Update, hosted by county Legis. Wayne Horsley, D-Lindenhurst. The community college is now the largest community college in the State University of New York system, with a 22.4 percent increase in enrollment.
Also, when it comes to revenue, the college is expected to take in $150,816 more than budgeted and spend $481,355 less. Even better, the college earned a $1.2 million cost-avoidance savings for its measures to conserve energy.
Here are the highlights for each of SCCC’s campuses, from Horsley’s statement:
Ammerman Campus
Enrolls over 12,557 students in 75 academic programs, has expanded credit and continuing education offerings has increased partnerships with secondary schools, and helped expand offerings in the Distance Education Program. This year the Ammerman Campus was also host to Suffolk’s first “One College” commencement exercise, and accreditation by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.Eastern Campus
Enrolls over 3,000 students and hosts several unique academic programs; such as culinary arts & graphic and interior design. The Eastern Campus has also increased faculty collaboration with: Atlantis Marine Aquarium & Research, Brookhaven National Labs, and Stony Brook University.Grant Campus
Enrolls over 8,139 students and achieved cost savings in the facilities area by completing in-house construction and modification work on a new Piano Lab, Art Studio, Academic Skills Center, and several other small construction projects. The Grant Campus has also secured $80,000 in external funding for scholarships to students that are entering the HVAC/R program. On Long Island, the average starting salary for an HVAC engineer is over $50,000. The Grant Campus has also spearheaded a campus-wide recycling program for the 2007-2008 academic year, and achieved energy savings through several green initiatives; such as modernized boilers and chillers.

This is great! Now students who graduate from high school can have the confidence of getting a great education right here where they live… don’t have to travel far or move away with all their potential and promise. Here on Long Island we can get one of the best, if not the best, education in the nation. It is affordable in comparison to other institutions of learning elsewhere in other states and other countries…
I for one, have always encouraged my work colleagues and my own children to explore attending a local college or university right here on the island… and hey “whatever happens on Long Island…. stays on Long Island…!”
Right?!
Long Island has some great colleges including stat schools. Here is a link for infomation about Long Island Colleges http://www.longislandcolleges.com/college/suffolk-community-college.html.
