News 12, in real time!

November 27, 2007 by David Reich-Hale

l12mapsmall.gifNot sure how many people use Cablevision’s interactive channels. I originally gave them a shot years ago, but gave up because it wasn’t worth the hassle of resetting the cable box each time the system failed – which was each time I tried those iO stations.

Anyway, today the company’s News 12 Networks announced it had redesigned and launched an enhanced News 12 Interactive station.

It’s true. They did redesign it and it is enhanced – it didn’t crash the cable box! It did, however, take a full minute to load. It also took 50 seconds to load the iO extra features and when it did load, the top item was a story about News 12’s summer-long illegal immigration series. That’s months old.

It gets better, however, with press conference footage with college students discussing the lack of affordable housing. That’s an important story – and most LIBN readers would agree. There was also a feature on Cyber Monday.

The weather bar, surprise, surprise, took 30 seconds to load and when it did, the weather in Lindenhurst was displayed. I’ve been to Lindenhurst. Have driven through it a few times. But I don’t live there. Anyway, glad to see it’s 47 degrees a few miles west of Babylon Village, feels like 41 and there’s a wind blowing west at 13 mph. Bundle up you Lindenhurstians.

Overall it’s a marked improvement. Have any of you used Cablevision’s interactive services? Ever buy a car on Optimum Auto? What do you think of News 12’s new iO look? Let us know. By the way, it’s still 46 degrees in Lindenhurst.

I tried it and thought it was great. I was able to watch Scott Feldman discuss golf. What a mastermind he is. How come he never went to Channel 2 or 7. Tom Brokaw, Peter Jennings, Walter Cronkite and Scott Feldman. Ho Ho Ho!

    Jamie, you make me chuckle.

Is the Optimum Phone part of this too? We received a phone call the other night, and the caller ID displayed on the TV. Thought it was pretty nifty, until I realized the phone was right next to me, showing me the same information, plus the name of the person who was calling.

Now if we could just program the cable boxes from our computers, I wouldn’t need to drop $800 on a TiVo.

I’d like to say I thought it was great, but….I cannot stand the waiting for everything to load with Optimum. Even when you just change the channel there is a big delay. When you use those other “special” channels, though, it is like waiting for dial-up or something. Seems to me with all the technology in this world today, they could speed up not only how fast their channels load, but their online service as well…I haven’t changed to Verizon yet — I’m still waiting to see how it turns out for everyone else!!
