A few weeks ago, LI Biz Blog asked readers how they network online. Some people used LinkedIn, which is geared towards professional use. Some, however, use Facebook, the MySpace alternative that is now attracting a more adult crowd.
Many people are now using Facebook to create professional networks, host idea-centered groups and even to find jobs.
For example, a few weeks ago, Crain’s New York Business ran a story about how Jeff Chu, the new senior editor of business publication Fast Company, found that job on Facebook.
From the story:
While surfing through members’ personal pages on the social networking site, the financial journalist came upon a former colleague from his days at Time magazine.
“Dude, what are you doing on Facebook?” Mr. Chu wrote to Robert Safian, now editor in chief of Fast Company.
In the old days, that kind of salutation might not have pleased a prospective employer. But times have changed. The contact prompted a flurry of exchanges, all on Facebook, which led to a lunch meeting in the real world. The official job offer came through the site.
“I don’t think I got a regular e-mail from him,” Mr. Chu says. “I don’t even know if I had his phone number.”
So, here’s the contest. Are any of you out there using your Facebook page in a professional facility? Are you having success with Facebook groups for business purposes? We’d love to take a look at your Facebook pages.
The reader with the combination of most professional and the most used (based on the amount of connections you have) Facebook page will be crowned the LI Biz Blog Long Island Biz-Friendly Facebook Champion, an accolade you can tack on your resume … or your Facebook profile. Either paste the link to your profile in the comments section or e-mail them to libizblog@gmail.com.
We’ll make you a medallion for your site if you win, too.
Good luck.
