Free planning for unemployed AHM workers
August 8, 2007 by Henry E. Powderly II
Members of the Long Island chapter of the Financial Planning Association are offering former employees of American Home Mortgage financial planning, free of charge.
If you were laid off by American Home and would like to take the organization up on its offer, call (516) 542-2004 and you will be referred to a planner.
And to all of those who lost their jobs, best of luck from the LI Biz Blog. We hope all of you a soft landing and a new job as soon as possible.
From the FPA-LI statement:
This is the time when employees rely on the six months of savings/emergency funds that Financial Planners advise. Start a job search, make sure to continue health insurance, and find ways of cutting back on expenses until new employment is found. It is also the time to rollover company pension plans. Even if they think that they need some of the money, there are significant tax advantages for them to convert their pension to an IRA first rather than take the money.

It was a real shame to see AHM go out. They offered some unique programs for home owners and had some wonderful sales people. This really shows how much everyone needs a financial planner. How is it that only 1 in 20 families have one? It really points out one of the reasons most people will not have an adequate retirement income and may need to continue to work.
