Guess what? Alden hates Tanger

January 16, 2007 by Henry E. Powderly II

Suffolk County Legis. Cameron Alden may be “devastated” by Entenmann’s plan to cut 350 jobs from its Bay Shore Facility, but he’s downright mad when it comes to the planned Deer Park Tanger outlet center.

In speaking about the county’s need to bring in new business to replace jobs lost in the county, Alden called the shopping center a cannibalistic operation that will feast on the other businesses, shopping malls and downtowns that surround it.

“Tanger’s not going to bring people to Long Island,” he said in a phone conversation. Alden pointed to the fact that most of the areas immediately surrounding the Island have their own outlet centers. Residents from the Hudson Valley have the Woodbury Commons, Connecticut boasts the Clinton Crossing center and New Jersey has outlet centers in Elizabeth and Flemington.

Alden hopes less anthropophagus endeavors, like small businesses and technology firms, will open up in Suffolk.
